…..send me a postcard

There used to be simpler times.

Times were pen pals were a real thing,

You had friends from all over the world who wrote you letters on postcards

“These are the Megalithic Temples in my city Malta, it is the oldest man made monumental structure. I have never been there, though I do hear it’s a beautiful place. When you visit we will go there together and explore this beautiful place. Oh by the way what is your favorite color?”

With Love, your pen pal

…..they would read.

The excitement, anticipation those letters/postcards brought made the days worthwhile. You would sit in a circle with your friends at school, each one showing off their beautiful postcards

Each one bragging about how their pen pal was the best, how they had taste, how they sent the most interesting letters

Those were simpler times, now cyber bullying is the order of the day,

People who don’t know you eager to destroy you with the stroke of a keyboard, all because your mind works in a different way from theirs,

Suicide, stress, insecuirty on the rise because of the pressure.

Pressure because your friend is posting pictures in the Bahamas, with her dashing husband and adorable kids

#too blessed #don’t hate on me #yolo #vacay #baecation #famcation #family goals #lg #my hubby is goals #look but don’t touch #high definition

Here you are at 27 feeling the “single and searching pressure” wondering when your time will come,

During the simpler times, you only heard about some-one’s business when you would actively go looking for it,

Now it’s in your face, all over the place, all day everyday. Personal bubble of space? What’s that? We are in each other’s space all the time.

During the simpler times, fathers would wake up early to go to the factories to work for themselves and their families, now they wait by the shut factory gates, hoping they be called in to scrap dirt off the floors.

“hear! hear! The robots will make our processes more efficient, they can work round the clock, no sick days, no off days, no random funerals and we save money!”

During the simpler times, when we missed someone we actually took time out of our schedule to visit the person,

We knew where people lived and we enjoyed spending time with them,

Beep, it’s your phone “I miss you, hope you are well” it’s your friend or is she still? That’s the most affection she’s giving these days.

What do you want for your birthday?” A book, please. “A book book or a book?”

In simpler times a book was a book, it was not referred to as a book book, cause you know e-books, audio books are all “books”

Of course simpler times do not mean people were living the best lives,

Many people have been helped by technology, the number of Go Fund Me and Crowdfund accounts that have helped people are numerous, simpler times might not have helped as many people.

Now thanks to online shopping people don’t have to leave their houses. Are we breeding a lazy generation maybe? Unless you are enochlophobic what’s your excuse really for buying peanut butter online?

Technology has brought us together though, thanks to it I am reading stories from all over the continent. These representatives through their blogs are making me see a different side of their countries and their people and I am in awe.

At the end of the day, you hold the control pad for your little world, you can use it for good or bad…

Blessing or curse, it depends with whether you prefer a postcard or an email?

Me?

Send me a postcard

And buy me a book… a book book

Do we still have postcards? I’m not sure. I’ll find out and when I do (whether this month or next month), I’ll ask for your address and send you one from Kampala, Uganda.
