#BOTY2018: Day 8
On the 8th day of Christmas my true love sent to me a taaaste ooooof home 😉
The first time I had lasagna I must have been 8 or 10 years old. I was young but I had an appreciation of good food and my definition of good food was my mother’s cooking. There is no meal that my mother prepared that was bland, I enjoyed everything from the simple thing like sadza to potatoes, there was always a twist to them lol.
I remember the first time I had spinach and actually enjoyed it, she had mixed the spinach with eggs and it tasted delish!!!! I make it every now and again but I don’t know it always tastes a little different from the first. So she used to prepare the lasagna using macaroni just an FYI, macaroni is a type of pasta so you get different types of pastas like spaghetti, cannelloni, tagliatelle etc I grew up thinking all pastas were called macaroni and spaghetti was a whole separate thing lol. She would ever so carefully layer the casserole dish first with macaroni then a layer of spicy mince, cream, macaroni, mince, cream and so forth until she was done then she would top it off with a layer of macaroni and finally sprinkle some cheese, then into the oven it went. The aroma would fill up the whole house, you could literally taste the cheese in the air I swear lol
Without a shadow of doubt, this was my favorite meal growing up. Do you know even when she didn’t use lasagna sheets every time she would cut it out to place on the plates, it would be a perfect square, perfect I say. There would be no macaroni items looking displaced and the taste was heavenly, you know when you taste something and immediately know that you have found the one, the one meal that will never be replaced by anything, that was it for me. I savored every taste and always left some food for the next morning cause I just didn’t want the food to finish. Do you know a sensual food experience? It’s that experience you have when you leave food overnight and have it the next morning, it actually tastes better than when you had it fresh cause all the flavors will have absorbed into the food.
As much as I love going out, there is something about a home cooked meal. It has all the right flavors and ingredients made to a specific taste and you know the best part, it is prepared with love and I guess that’s my mum’s secret ingredient, she really gives her all into what she prepares and I learnt and am still learning from the best. This Christmas, my family and I (just the 2 of us) are going to stuff our faces with gammon :yum: what are you preparing for Christmas?
